iPhone 14 review

The iPhone 14 is a capable smartphone with a seriously snappy CPU

The competent iPhone 14 is a smartphone with a gorgeous screen, a seriously speedy CPU, and good cameras. Although it is inferior than the iPhone 14 Pro, you are still saving $200, $250, or AU$350. This reliable, if unspectacular iPhone may be for you if you're not looking for a large screen on a budget (for that, see the new iPhone 14 Plus). It has a few really cool next-generation features that you may never use.

It's a little difficult to be thrilled about an iPhone with a screen, CPU, and design from the previous year, but when seen independently and without the significant influence of the new iPhone 14 Pro, Apple's new iPhone 14 appears to be a pretty darn nice smartphone.

Even while the iPhone 14 shares a lot of similarities with the iPhone 13, it has many internal changes that promise to give a better user experience overall.

The two rear cameras on the phone, a 12MP wide and a 12MP ultra-wide, both have new sensors, and the 12MP TrueDepth camera can now autofocus and eat up more light. The brand-new Photonic Engine from Apple supports all of the lenses ("photonic" refers to the management of photons, or light particles – read more about it in our iPhone 14 camera explainer). Practically speaking, it involves rearranging Apple's imaging pipeline so that uncompressed photos are now processed using the Deep Fusion neural engine (rather than compressed ones, as it did previously).

The fantastic Super Retina XDR OLED screen is still available, but if you don't like the notch, you might want to consider the 14 Pro or Pro Max instead because they have Apple's cool new Dynamic Island coupled with an adaptive refresh rate and an always-on display.

Additionally, Apple decided to stick with the Apple silicon from the previous year for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Of course, it's not the exact same A15 Bionic that powered the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini in 2016. This A15 Bionic sports a five-core GPU instead of a four-core GPU. It should deliver better performance than the chip in the iPhone 13 because it is effectively the same chip that was in the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max from a year ago.

Even though they are difficult to test, several fascinating new capabilities are available, such as crash detection, which lets your phone notify emergency services and important contacts if you are involved in a car accident. In a similar line, emergency services can now be contacted using satellite communications on the iPhone 14. It's encouraging to see that even Apple's entry-level iPhone 14 gained access to this new feature, a first for the industry.

Other notable internal changes include a new heat dissipation mechanism that will improve the phone's ability to control temperatures and improve its performance (this phone has better battery life than the iPhone 13). The back glass may now be replaced without having to replace the entire casing, according to Apple, making this iPhone easier to repair than earlier models.

On September 7, 2022, Apple introduced the whole lineup of iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

As of September 16, the iPhone 14 is available for purchase after being up for pre-order on September 9. It starts at $799 / £849 / AU$1,399 for the 128GB model, but you can upgrade to 512GB of storage (if you're already intrigued, check out our top iPhone 14 discounts).

There are no alternatives for more RAM than the standard 6GB, unlike most Android phones, even though that is more than the base iPhone 13, which had only 4GB.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 resembles the iPhone 13 almost exactly except from new color options (we tested the tasteful pastel blue model). The screen, stereo speaker grilles, Lightning port, and even its aluminum frame all continue to be the same. However, there are minor structural variations.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Its dimensions are 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm, slightly thicker than the iPhone 13's. Additionally, it is two grams lighter than the previous phone, which we attribute to the new thermal architecture in the gadget. The iPhone 14 goes into the official iPhone 13 MagSafe cover perfectly well, although the iPhone 14's two-lens camera array is significantly larger despite the similarity in chassis (as are the lenses themselves).

The iPhone 14's dust and water resistance is the same as the iPhone 13's, and all of the materials, including the Ceramic Shield covering the display, are the same. Naturally, we tested the durability of our iPhone 14 by running it through a sprinkler. It was fine and would have appreciated the break from the sweltering New York heat.

The Super Retina XDR display on the iPhone 14 has a resolution of 2532 x 1170 and 460 pixels per inch, which is almost identical from the iPhone 13. In this now somewhat dated design, the notch that was eliminated from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max still exists. It includes an upgraded TrueDepth camera (which is still 12MP but has a better light-gathering sensor and can autofocus), an IR sensor, a flood illuminator, and, most importantly, the top speaker (the other speaker is on the bottom of the phone). As it seems unlikely that it would survive in the projected iPhone 15 of next year, this is perhaps the notch's last chance.

This display is vibrant (up to 1,200 nits), vivid (Wide Color), and has deep blacks (2,000,000:1 contrast ratio) thanks to OLED, yet it already feels dated compared to the most recent Apple display innovations. Neither the 120Hz ProMotion that we initially encountered on 2021's Pro versions nor the adaptive refresh rate exist. only 60Hz. When the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max provide adjustable refresh rates that span from 10Hz to 120Hz, that can be difficult to accept. Additionally, for increased power economy, those phones include a new always-on display mode that may slow down to just 1Hz. Once more, you pay more for this.

The iPhone 14 has just two rear cameras:

  • A 12MP main (26mm, f/1.5)
  • A 12MP ultrawide (120-degree field of view, 13mm, f/2.4)

In comparison to their forerunners, these cameras have improved sensors and overall low-light performance. Now that the front camera, which is also 12 MP, has autofocus, taking group selfies should be a little bit simpler.

A new imaging pipeline is advantageous for all cameras. In order to work with uncompressed images, the Photonic Engine prioritizes Deep Fusion neural image processing earlier than in the past.

Although we've also tested the iPhone 14 Pro, we do regret having optical zoom and macro capabilities at our disposal when taking pictures using the iPhone 14. Even so, the majority of users should be content with this degree of photographic abilities and the high-quality output.

This model, like the rest of the iPhone 14 line, can record videos in up to 4K resolution, and Cinematic Mode has been upgraded to support 4K at 30 frames per second.

Active Mode is a brand-new feature that can be accessed by choosing the running person icon in the top right corner of the camera app's viewfinder. This is a remarkably efficient method for minimizing tremor in action videos. No, the iPhone 14 doesn't have a new gimbal. Instead, Apple uses over-scan and enhanced roll detection, which is a fancy way of stating that it quickly and in-the-moment edits the video to maintain the center (often a subject) more fluidly in-frame. Although some video data is lost during processing (leading in a reduced frame), the outcomes are GoPro-smooth. Although I'm not sure how extremely helpful this is, if you enjoy action movies, it might be a blessing.

PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 has been an awesome console ever since its launch in 2013. But here we are approaching six years down the road and it's beginning to feel its age. Hey, how's it going? I'm Josh and from 91 Tech. And today we're talking about the PS4. How does it hold up in 2019? And is it still worth buying now as someone who owned the PlayStation 2 and then the Xbox 360 before carrying the PS4? I can honestly say I think I made the right choice for the console generation for me.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

The Xbox One is a lot of fun but the PS4 just nailed it with exclusives and there hasn't been a whole lot to complain about since it debuted in 2013. I personally got it in the Christmas of 2014 and have put a good few hours into it since this year is the original model and it's Up. Although I do have occasionally some hardware issues with it mainly spitting discs, you probably won't need to worry about that. If you're in the market for a PS4 as these older ones are no longer for sale instead. All you'll see being sold is the PS4 slim and PS4 Pro.

This is a very good thing:

This is a very good thing. Both of these newer iterations of the console are super solid and great upgrades to the original PlayStation 4 the slim being well Slimmer and the pro is more powerful which of these you get is really up to you. But in my opinion if you don't have a 4K TV, you might as well just get the slim and if you do own a 4K TV or plan to get one while the pro is just a no-brainer if you're looking to buy used Craigslist is always an option and you can find consoles on they're pretty cheap, but honestly, I'd recommend just buying new because they're frequent sales and the PS4 slim is often as low as 200 bucks, which is a steal of the deal.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

I'll make sure to have links to the best deals. I can find on Amazon in the description below. So maybe check one of those out if you're considering buying the PS4 that'll be said, I think I'm getting ahead of myself here. I kind of just launched into a which one you should buy instead of Not you should buy one in the first place. So should you well, yeah, you should probably if you don't have a PS4 by now, I'm legitimately curious as to why because it's been out for quite some time. I would say good excuses include already having an Xbox One or just not needing a PS4 so not buying one, but I think that's about it not to knock you if you don't have one but the PS4 is at the price point now that it's fairly accessible to pretty much everybody.

" I know 200 bucks isn't chump change for most people but it's not that much either all things considered the PlayStation 4 is a great console and there's really only one factor standing in the way of buying it and it's something I haven't mentioned in the reviews past. I did one of these and I think September or October and the only reason I'm re-reviewing it so soon as because there have been rumors about the PlayStation 5".
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

In fact, I would say there have been a plethora of rumors as of late pointing towards a PS5 release somewhere in 2020. Probably November while it is possible for a 20-19 release. I find it personally very unlikely. I think that would be jumping the gun as frankly. I don't think people are ready at You console + there have just been rumors that just started of companies finally starting to make games for the PS5. So I'd say late 2020 makes sense. So you might see some clickbait articles saying the PS5 will come out in 2019, but I would highly doubt that November 20 20 makes sense. And that's probably where it'll happen. Although we could see an announcement as soon as this year. That would be pretty realistic that all being said.

The PS4 and not waiting for the PS5:

We are reaching the end of the PS4 is life at with that. You shouldn't expect too many more huge exclusive games to come out besides hopefully a couple like the last of us to whether or not you think it's worth buying the PS4 and not waiting for the PS5 is up to you. But personally, I'd say that the release is far enough away that it's worth buying the PS4 has some amazing games and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not playing them there have been to reverse the PS5 would play PS4 games as well. But I mean that would be highly unlikely to happen.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

I think is great as that would be so don't expect that to be a thing. And so if you really want a PS4 now what I'm saying is just get one. They're Enough that I don't think you would be in too much of a loss if the PS5 does come out relatively soon and honestly the PS4 is worth it just it just it's from last year's God of War to Spider-Man the new spiral reignited it Trilogy Horizon zero Dawn blood-borne the Uncharted games Last of Us Remastered and so many more you'll never find a time where there aren't any more games to play because there are so many and there are so many good games to what's crazy is that all those games? I just mentioned are PS4 exclusives, which means you can't play them anywhere else at least right.

So obviously playing games is fun:

Now, of course, a lot of other titles also worth a shot like the new Red Dead Redemption to but there are so many that I'm just not going to go through them. He has four exclusives are really the reason you would buy a PS4 over the Xbox One. I think the PS4 is worth it just for that Sony really nailed this generation and hopefully, Xbox is taking notes for the next and comes out with some more games. So obviously playing games is fun. But how you play them is also pretty important and needs to be enjoyable for the best experience possible.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

And this is another highlight of the PS4. The Dualshock 4 controllers not only are these things relatively cheap often going on sale for around 40 bucks on Amazon links below but there are also super comfortable to play with and my only complaint is that the start button for some reason is called the options button instead the controller fits. Well in most people's hands and well does its job there's not a ton to say here. However, I will point out that battery life isn't amazing at least after years of using my original controllers from 2014 died after only a couple hours of playtime at this point rendering them a most useless at times and forcing me to use my newer red controller instead. Luckily. They're easy enough to charge with the micro USB cord and you can charge them while playing but keep in mind battery degradation is something that is going to happen over time. Also, you probably won't actually need a ton of controllers as unfortunately, not many games support couch Co-op any more.

Games just aren't options on the PS4:
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

There is some like rocket league but these are few and far between and the focus Now is really on the online aspect of games. I find this quite sad personally as someone who grew up playing for player Halo with All the time that's just kind of the way things go. I personally have a switch for local multiplayer. If people come over Smash Brothers are Mario Kart is a great way to pass the time and those types of games just aren't options on the PS4. Although to be fair Crash Bandicoot racing is being remastered and is coming out of this year. So that's an awesome link to my Nintendo switch review in the description.

By the way, if anyone's curious PlayStation Plus as an added cost that brings the online play to the PlayStation. It's necessary for most games at this point such as Call of Duty and Battlefield and any other game that involves using the internet to connect with other people. There are a couple that doesn't need PlayStation Plus such as Fortnight, but it's probably something you're going to need to expect to buy so you do need to add the price of 60 bucks to whatever price the PS4 is because well if you want to play multiplayer games, which you probably do you need PlayStation Plus at the end of the day, it's not hard to see that the PlayStation 4 is a great device and if you somehow haven't jumped on this console generation yet.

I think that you really should just try to pick up a PS4 slim on sale as sales happen fairly frequently and you might as well try to The best bang for your buck again.

Samsung Galaxy S10+

This is a Samsung Galaxy S 10 and this is the phone to be for 2019

The phone great but it's positioned so perfectly at the beginning of this year. So the Galaxy S Series in general, which I think has been overshadowed by the Galaxy Note usually every year has really found its Groove with the Galaxy S 10. This phone is basically the most complete all-around phone you can buy which is why I say it sets the bar. This is the phone you have to beat if you want to be considered the best this year. So the big new changes are things to know what the S 1000 R inspects design and cameras. Those are the main things.

The design is the biggest new change on the S10. It's the most recognizable new design in a phone at a little while and I'd say The there are very few downsides but there are a few so when you get it out the box, it's of course dominated by this huge beautiful bright display and I'm reviewing yes 10 plus so it's an even bigger and more beautiful screen super viewable Outdoors great colors and calibration thin bezels all the way around thin chin thin forehead and I made an entire video all about the display. Actually that I'll link below if you want to watch that my couple of downsides pretty much feel like nitpicking at this point. Like I have the occasional accidental screen, press from the infinity edge display somewhere that I found a little bit annoying and the power button on the right-hand side is definitely annoyingly high up.

This white Galaxy S 10 plus which has like this iridescent Pearl:

I wish it was lower and also it looks like every single reviewer got this white Galaxy S 10 plus which has like this iridescent Pearl cover changing finish. It's kind of trippy a lot of people like it. I don't know. I really don't think I like it as much I much prefer something a bit cleaner a bit stealthier really there are other colors available to or you could grab a skin from our Channel sponsored. And plus you get the added bonus of never having to wipe fingerprints off the back again. So I don't know maybe it's just me. I'll link it below if you're interested in that stealth look, but the body of the phone itself is of course Glass and Metal but it's somehow a super lightweight phone like it really looks like it should be heavier than it is but it's super light in the hand.

I wish I got to hold the ceramic version because I assume that would feel more substantial in the hand, but that's not even a complaint. That's just something I noticed. Okay, so lots of thoughts on this hole punch out cut out display that they have on all these phones SN plus with the dual camera cutout S10 and S10 E.E. With the single-camera cutout for the way full review on the S10 e is going to be separate but I have this theory on why I've actually ended up liking the hole punch cut out more than a notch. So I kind of started off feeling the same way about it as a notch. I even called it a glorified Notch. Basically, I didn't feel any different I was looking it up and I kind of didn't really find a name for it. But, you know the cognitive effect where you can be missing a bit of information. A photo or video but because of the information that surrounds it your brain kind of fills in what was supposed to be there sort of subconsciously like that.

"I think that's what's happening with the hole punch cut out like my brain was already totally used to seeing notches and phones just because the past couple years of phones kind of all had them but there's something about having just a little little bit of extra pixels on the top and to the side of the notch that made it easier to forget about I hope that makes sense but also the hole punch it really gets in the way of anything".

The ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work:

It's not blocking any controls in games or apps or anything important in videos or anything like that. It's small enough that it fits essentially in the notification bar at the top. I'll be at it's a little bit taller. But basically, I'm in the camp that this ends up feeling better than the notch. You can fight me. If you disagree also have an update to the glass screen protector situation with the ultrasonic fingerprint reader.

So I did the display where I tested a regular fingerprint reader it worked as you can imagine and a glass fingerprint reader did not work then everyone started. Any links to this white stone Dome tempered glass screen protector with a very unique like 20-minute long install process, but I installed it and despite my imperfect install it definitely did work. So if you're interested in using a tempered glass screen protector and the ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S 10, that one does work, I'll link it below of course as well. I also installed it on Instagram live. It took me like half an hour. It was kind of hilarious.

With the Galaxy S 10, the specs are great:

But hey, it worked so specs you don't really have to worry about specs with the Galaxy S 10. The specs are great Snapdragon E55 8 gigs of RAM plenty of storage and performance, of course, will fall in line with that. And this is a very smooth phone throughout my time using it which it should be in the first two weeks. Samsung galaxy s10+ battery life. The one new spec to note is the battery. The batteries are bigger and I gotta say the 40 100 million power battery on this s 10 plus has been excellent. I've regularly gotten five-plus hours of screen on time with this huge screen, which is super impressive the other day.

I had a light day of use and I had seven hours of screen on time. With 15% left, so not quite the full two-day weekend phone that the May 20 Pro our battery champ could be but pretty damn good for one day for a huge screen like this. And of course, you also have fast charging and wireless charging and speaking of wireless charging. You also have reverse wireless charging which is pretty cool. I mean, it's still kind of a gimmick. It's super slow. It's at four point five watts and for context, a normal Qi wireless charger is usually up to 9 or 10 watts. Usually more the slow charger that comes with the iPhone is 5 Watts. So it's not something you use every day.

The standard characteristics of photos from the Galaxy S. 10 are sharp:

It's obviously really slow but it's more useful for charging small things like the Galaxy buds or even like a Qi-enabled Smartwatch or something like that with a much smaller battery, but also be cool for when Apple reinvents it for the are pods to and then of course, the Samsung galaxy s10 song, you can't forget about the new cameras on Galaxy S 10 and buy new. I mean really just the ultra-wide camera is new and the other two cameras are essentially the same as last year which is to say firmly third place or so. On my chart for best overall image quality that would be behind the pixel and the iPhone the standard camera is still really good, Samsung galaxy s10+ screen protector, especially when you give it enough light, it handles colors and high dynamic range better than ever. Thanks to the software. But really you're looking at essentially the same Tech the Dual aperture main camera with o is II telephoto camera that you'll almost never use but hey, it's there if you need it and then the standard characteristics of photos from the Galaxy S. 10 are sharp pretty colorful evenly lit not a ton of contrast but still vibrant and a little Overexposed just seems like if ever airs on anything it's with overexposure.

It would much rather blow out highlights and evenly light people and subjects than lose anything to Shadows. But the ultra-wide camera is the most fun addition by far. It doesn't have o is but you hardly need it at this focal length, and I've been waiting for something fun and new like this to bring A New Perspective especially to more abstract photos or architecture photos. The Distortion can get a little mushy if you're trying to do subjects. People with this Ultra wide shot but overall, you're usually much more in it for The Unique Look than the portrait and that it delivers. So yeah, super wide angle camera like this it already has software stabilization. It's also already a waterproof phone.

I feel like with a good enough ruggedized case. This could basically replace a GoPro just throwing that out there. So yeah, I'm glad Samsung added this the sne also has the ultra-wide camera as well and apple probably tosses it in the next iPhone to so thumbs up for that. Also. The front-facing camera is even more of that. So there's a front-facing wide-angle camera like I mentioned and on the SN plus a second cut out for a depth sensor as a result. The front-facing selfie is from the SN plus is pretty good. They don't strike me as a way better than the S10 or the pixel or others. It still draws a depth map that can fail sometimes and it's still overexposed also all the time, but overall the selfie camera is a b-plus.

"I still wish there was a second Ultra wide camera though. That would have been sweet. Also, I got to say I wish there was a dedicated night mode in this camera. It doesn't really have one kind of like something. Night sight or what Huawei has done with their night cameras. And even when you do have it turned on it's basically in the scene recognition in the AI. So It'll recognize when it's dark enough".

The Samsung galaxy s10+ availability:

But even that doesn't make as big of a difference as night sight so I kind of wish there was a dedicated mode, but hey, maybe they could add that with a software update but speaking of software updates. You can now remap the Bixby button to do anything. You want almost kind of I mean, there's kind of a huge catch. I mean Bixby still isn't very good. But in the Bixby settings, you can now single press or double press the big button to launch whatever app you want as long as the other still launches Bixby. Oh, and by the way, Samsung galaxy s10+ availability, the whole whatever you want a thing doesn't include other voice assistants. So so anything you want except our voice assistants. So yeah, you can I don't know you can kind of hide it behind.

So, you know what I'll say, it's a step in the right direction being able to do that better than you could before and that's a step in the right direction kind of Theme of the rest of when you why it's a step forward. This is the first version of a Samsung Android overlay that I've actually stuck with the stock launcher and used it, you know, typically I will switch over to Nova Launcher pretty quick but one you are different and that says something about the direction they're going it's pretty smooth overall. And of course, the icons which were sort of cartoony and huge on the stock grid are actually customizable. So I feel like I've kind of had my way with it and I've gotten used to it and I still don't know about version updates in the future. It's Android pee out the box. So fingers crossed Samsung is also turning over a new leaf with software updates, but that's the sort of thing.

The Galaxy S 10+, I give it a thumbs up:

We'll have to wait and see overall though. I give it a thumbs up. It's not too overly colorful. There is a dark mode which is cool. And the theme of keeping everything pretty low on the screen. So it's easily accessible with one hand is really smart with especially how tall these displays of gotten. So on top of all of that ad ip68 water resistance, like usual add Wi-Fi 6 expandable storage a headphone jack. Like it's just really super complete. There are so many little things on top of the already solid core experience that I mean, I spent a thousand bucks on a Galaxy S n+ with my own and I really think this is one of the few phones that actually feels like it's worth it. Like even if you want to judge it by the five pillars of a great smartphone you already have them, Samsung galaxy s10+ android version you know, the build quality sort of Timeless. We've seen it before the battery life is excellent. The performance is really good. The cameras are nice and the display is Best in Class got them all on lock. The bar has been set and it's been set pretty high until the next one.

Samsung Galaxy Fold!

I've been just sort of fascinated by   Samsung Galaxy Fold
Ever since it was unveiled a couple weeks ago. I've been just sort of fascinated by this phone like Samsung never let anyone touch it. They never showed it to anyone. They only had very specific demo footage for a while. It kind of felt like a myth but now suddenly I'm actually holding one. So the basic concept in case you forgot Galaxy fold has one smaller outer screen and one large folding inner screen in a single device for 1980 bucks. This is my very first impressions of V final phone that people paying this money will actually get so right off the bat. This phone is chunky.

So we kind of saw it coming with other folding phones like the Royale Flex pie and even the Huawei mate X but it kind of has basically the feel of too small. Samsung phones put back-to-back next to each other with a hinge in between and it doesn't go all the way completely flat against each other when it's closed like a sandwich instead. They create this little angle like a small triangle and then the phone's shape like this Fold It Up is just really tall and narrow. So it's got this like candy bar sort of feel and it's pretty heavy as well. Now the screen on the front as you might remember is a 4.6-inch cover display very tall and then when you flip it open you get a 7.3 inch OLED display.

"That's nearly exactly 4 by 3. So pretty wide now I know the main question a lot of people have about this is probably about the crease down in the Middle where it folds. So to be perfectly clear".

The actual closing and unfolding movement of opening and closing, the Samsung Galaxy Fold is extremely satisfying:

Yes, you can see the crease especially when you're just a little bit off Axis or if you have a light wallpaper, and yes, you can even feel it when you run your finger over it so it's not this perfectly precisely flat uninterrupted glass feel but honestly gets pretty close. Like when you're looking at it straight on you can easily forget about it and it's again much. Better than that real FlexPay. I saw see. Yes, although I guess that wasn't a very high bar to clear. And also I got to say the actual closing and unfolding movement of opening and closing. It is extremely satisfying.

I wish I brought my mic to this Hands-On so you could actually hear the thunk sound that it makes when it closes but there's some strong magnets in either half of the phone that open and close and connect it. It's so strong you could actually like pick up paper clips with the phone but that opening and closing that think it makes I kind of love that and a hinge it just sort of snaps open to a full hundred eighty degree flat position and everywhere in between those two positions is pretty fluid to whatever angle you want. But it definitely feels like its Springs are trying to pull itself closed.

But yeah opening and closing. The phone is definitely a two-handed operation. I tried it with one hand. And of course, I really really didn't want to drop it and I couldn't do it. So it's definitely going to be a two-handed process. I'm sure that's what we mostly expected. And actually, that process can get kind of tricky sometimes with the interesting button layout so there's a power button Side of the phone where you'd probably expect it.

The phone Samsung Galaxy Fold is easy to fold it or unfold it:

There's also the volume rocker and also a separate fingerprint reader for unlocking that doubles as a Bixby button. So it's actually incredibly easy to accidentally trigger Bixby whether you're unlocking the phone or just trying to fold it or unfold it. I guess that's classic Samsung. Okay, a few other things I did notice one Samsung did technically just make a phone with a notch and no headphone jack kind of sad I guess but it actually does come with their new Galaxy buds their wireless headphones.

So that's cool and the notch on the inside screen which holds two cameras and a bunch of other sensors actually has this lip to it that sort of raised up from the rest of the screen, but the notification pulldown actually doesn't work from that side when you're unfolded anyway, so I guess it's not a big deal that the lip is there but you definitely still get it cutting into things like videos and games or really anything that's full screen and then speaking of cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold actually has six total camera sensors:

So there's the 10-megapixel selfie camera on the front when it's List, then you open it up and you get that Notch which has an identical 10-megapixel selfie camera with an additional depth sensor like the Galaxy S 10 plus and then on the back. Yes in a camera bump on this already pretty thick phone. You have the standard the ultra wide and the telephoto camera is just like the galaxy has 10 had so you'll never be at a shortage of cameras and lenses here and you can see just looking at the phone Samsung have to do a lot of creative things just to get the fold to work like a normal phone.

There's some special adhesive in the display. And of course, the folding plastic that actually folds on the front. They also split the batter into two parts one in each half of the phone and it's all connected through this very special hinge design, but they still did manage to get high-end specs in there. You got your Snapdragon 855 12 gigs of RAM your 512 gigs of storage not expandable and then you have your stereo speakers. You still have reverse wireless charging and the combined battery is huge. It's 4380 milliamp hours. So it's really equipped.

It actually works and gets work done. Now. There are two main features to take advantage of the fact that it folds continuity and multi-window. So the continuity is interesting but it does make sense. So you do have totally separate wallpaper and home screen layouts on both the front and the back screens, they're independent of each other but with supported apps which are mostly Samsung and Google apps right now. You can open them on the small screen then unfold the phone and they will continue where you left off on the big screen and it actually works pretty quickly and surprisingly well much faster than that one time on stage that we first saw the demo.

I open the Play Store scroll down a little bit then unfolded the phone and the Play Store was open and even scroll down a bit where I left off that is dope another good application for it was Google Maps which we see in the demos of on stage, but I tried it. I opened up Google Maps and I clicked on this business listing and then when I unfolded the phone that listing was open where I left off just much bigger.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has two   huge screens on the inside and 12 gigs of RAM:

I got to play with this more. I think it also works with YouTube videos and some other apps. I'm going to test out a lot that should be really interesting. But that other feature I mentioned is multi-window and I guess as you'd expect with a huge screen on the inside and 12 gigs of RAM and everything, you can easily have multiple apps open at once you just have to swipe in from the right side and all the supporting apps will show up and you can have two apps side by side and you can adjust the size of the window the border between them and everything and that's about as far as I would typically go but you can keep opening and keep bringing in apps and adding floating windows and even more up to a total of 8 apps open at once and you can have most of them in these sort of floating multi Windows.

Not know what kind of person is doing that much multitasking on a little 7-inch screen that person probably needs a full-sized tablet anyway, but it's cool that the let you go crazy and won't limit you up till 8 apps. So overall I'm coming away from that initial hands-on pretty impressed. Like it's always scary when it comes. He announces something but then doesn't let you touch it and they don't want you to like ever use it until it's about to come out. So I was a bit nervous about actually being a complete finished feeling product. But it does feel pretty good. Now if I nitpick even a little bit, of course, I'm going to find all sorts of stuff. That's not ideal.

"You know, the outside screen being the main one. It's so small and has so much Bezel and hearing four point six inches doesn't sound that small but I find it actually even difficult to type on with the keyboard open on the small screen and then there's the notch stuff being a little bit weird and the slightly incomplete not quite fold is kind of weird".

The price the Samsung Galaxy Fold is very high:

The price is super high, you know, there's all that stuff but you know, what at the end of the day, even if you never use the screen on the front, you still get a big screen that folds in half and fits in your pocket. That's the part that feels like the future and the big screen is, of course, a better camera viewfinder a better web browser a better video washing experience and all of that is super cool. It's a step in the right direction and this is definitely going to be one Those funds people actually want to get in the stores and play with an open-close and see for themselves if they're into it, but there will also be much more video coverage coming including a full review on this channel.

iPad Pro The Best Ever... Still an iPad!

This is the new iPad Pro it is an incredible tablet still an iPad

Like it's the most beautiful most powerful most impressive iPad yet, but thanks to iOS 12.
It's just that it's just an iPad. It's not any closer to replacing my laptop use. It's not any more likely to be my main computer, but it's easily the best iPad ever.
Let me show you to me. So this iPad Pro looks like one of those renders of what people in the past imagine to tablet would look like before the iPad existed is crazy thin it's five-point nine millimeters completely flat. It has an incredible nearly bezel as the display.

Somehow has huge really impressive speakers and super powerful solid state inside. So right off the bat, there is an 11 inch or 12 points 9-inch version. And there's a space grey or silver. I will say the smaller one is much more reasonable and I think it's one most people get but I'm a big screen person. So here I am with the crazy big 12 points 9 inch iPad Pro and I prefer space grey but that's up to you and it's just a Marvel to hold like there are pretty sharp edges all the way around but I love that it's boxy like the iPhone 5S was it stands up on its own and it's so light the weight distribution is so even throughout the whole slab that you can hold it with a single finger in the middle of the Apple logo. All of this means it's really easy to hold the edges are kind of sharp. Like I said,  they can maybe dig into your hands a bit. If you're holding it for a long time with the heavier iPad, but even that is the rare battery, I thought would suffer from a being so thin nope.

"This tablet has a plus battery life again and the speakers on either side. They have Precision milled holes that I just think look really good and yet again the drivers are loud. They're far enough apart for stereo effect. They just somehow keep getting better. The camera on the back is the same as the iPhone 10s".

The iPad is so thin but it's way over in the corner:

10 are and the bump is pretty big because the iPad is so thin but it's way over in the corner. So my hands never really accidentally touch it or anything and the tablet is so big and so flat that it actually doesn't really affect the whole lying down flat on a table thing. It still doesn't Rock back and forth. I guess if I had to pick something that I don't like about the design it would be actually the extra antenna lines on the cellular version which I picked they're just not symmetrical. They don't look very even just a little off looking little extra the Wi-Fi version has antenna lines too but there's not as many but I'm never looking at the back of the iPad anyway, iPad pro apple, so it doesn't really bother me.

Oh and no headphone jack, of course, but you already know how I feel about that. This is a poor talking about here and I'm kind of already on that wireless life. Anyway. Anyway, I have like little hopes now of a new iPhone next year kind of looking like this like being really squared off and boxy but then pushing the display to the edge and I don't know I probably won't happen if they want to keep wireless charging of course, but I still would love that so clearly I like the outside.

The iPad Pro and they work now in any orientation:

Aesthetics the film a hand, it's awesome hardware and on the inside, it gets even more impressive. First of all, there's no fingerprint reader no home button since the bezels are so thin but there is the whole Suite of face ID sensors in the iPad Pro and they work now in any orientation so you can be portrait landscape upside down no matter what it works which is helpful because the fact that the front of the iPad is so uniform makes it easy to forget which way is the top.

Sometimes you grab it and you try to unlock it in your hand is covering a sensor since the bezel so thin but it just points a little arrow and tells you you're covering the sensor so you can unblock it and then you're in and the display is again easily not just one of the best in any tablet but one of the best screens I've ever used so a hundred twenty Hertz IPS LCD super accurate colors great viewing angles Ultra responsive and smooth and very bright when you need it true tone there. Also if you want it and the anti-reflective coating is great. So face IDs good the display is about as good as it gets and then the specs now, Probably heard me say before about Apple products. The numbers don't really matter as much and that's still true here. But let me give you this a 12x Bionic,  iPad pro and apple pencil. Is absolutely incredible. It is the fastest chip I've ever seen on a mobile device. If you've seen geek bench scores that have been pretty popular lately. It's benchmarking faster than many laptops rivaling the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The iPad and they line up really quickly:

It has 4 gigs of RAM and for some reason, the one terabyte iPad has six gigs of RAM, but generally, performance is just really good for multitasking the flying through apps productivity photo editing.
It's all fast and fluid it's a plus performance just like the previous iPad Pro, but now you have Headroom for days like it's more about being future-proof and your very future proof here. And then even the accessory ecosystem is all upgraded the new Apple pencil way better.

Obviously, you can't get much more Awkward than this was it's not a high bar to clear but it is now great. It snaps on to the side of the iPad with magnets and pears and wirelessly charges there. There's a little cut out on the side of this all-metal iPad that lets the wireless charging work through here and aligns everything up. I just think I'd miss out on an opportunity to The second-generation apple pencil a number two pencil, maybe that's just me.

Anyway, there's also now a new thinner folio case and a new keyboard case as well. These aren't things I use very much. I do sometimes have the folio on and a now connect via magnets throughout the whole back of the iPad and they line up really quickly and snap into place which makes them easy to put on and take off but sturdy while it is connected. So here's a fun visual show this on Twitter.

The iPad and you can see that there are magnets:

And when you pass it over something like the iPad it can show you where inside the magnets are. So you put it down on the iPad and you can see that there are magnets a lot of them everywhere all around the perimeter and they match up with the same magnet placement in Apple's accessories. And that's what helps them lock into place so quickly and easily the pins always line up it's smart and I'll leave a link below if you want to get some of this magic paper to look and see where magnets are and other things the most apple and 2018 thing ever though is all the price. X so every single thing we just talked about the new pencil the new folio case the keyboard case and a tablet itself are all more expensive than last year's versions which again, you can't ignore that but you could also argue these all work. So well together better than any third party version that's why people including myself keep buying these so what's the holdup?

IOS 12 and it's weird to say because iOS 12 is great. It's the best version of iOS yet by a lot and it's my favorite but on this Hardware, it leaves a lot to be desired. Like, don't get me wrong. It's an incredible iPad, but every year when you know, the new iPad Pro comes out we revisit this conversation of can this replace my laptop can it be my primary computer?

My computer with an iPad Pro:

It has a better display. It's a touchscreen 220 hurts. It's more expensive surely. This can replace my laptop. Right? Well, I wish I could replace my computer with an iPad Pro because I enjoy using the iPad that much more but there are still things that I need to do on a pretty regular basis that the iPad doesn't that I need to keep a laptop around for the big ones no file ecosystem. So if I'm photo editing and I want to bring other files in its kind of incredibly annoying like this thing needs finder not the current files app on.

YouTuber I want to be able to go to the YouTube for desktop site and then go into the YouTube studio and go through analytics and Studio features that way mobile Safari will not let me it kicks me out into the YouTube app every single time same with Google drive. There is a Google Drive app, but I want the desktop app with all the desktop features and the desktop UI and I can't do that in the default browser. There's no trackpad or mouse support in iOS at all to the keyboard works great if you have one but you can plug in any mouse in the world and it won't do anything and then the USBC Port you'd think would unlock a world of possibilities of connecting all kinds of accessories and being able to talk to them through the iPad. First of all Thunderbolt accessories don't work at all. Like they would on a laptop only USB type-c does so you can plug in a display, for example, iPad Pro as a laptop, but this is something you could already do with lightning and still, all it will do is mirror the display, but now it's up to five k. So the closest I can get to my ideal scenario of these with creative stuff on the iPad Pro is photo editing actually. So my camera of choice is a Hasselblad x1d.

The iPad Pro is easily my favorite:

Nothing happens it actually it just starts charging the camera. So while that's a letdown, I basically we'll have to take the SD card out and I have a USBC to SD card adapter. I plug that in then I get to import the file it goes into photos. I can bring that into Lightroom and then I can do all my edits with the raw file and editing on the iPad Pro is easily my favorite way of editing photos with the pencil with the awesome hundred twenty Hertz display.

"It's great. But that's exactly what I could do with the lightning Port before. In fact, there's virtually nothing really new that I can do with the USBC port on the iPad Pro that I couldn't already do with a lightning adapter".

But thanks to iOS. It doesn't mean as much now as I think it could in the future. So basically this iPad Pro the hardware like I've said, it's crazy. It's great. It's better than a lot of laptops. It's better than Apples cheapest laptops actually, but it's definitely still an iPad. All the same, things that the previous iPad Pro did just better and that is like a textbook like a great thing to say about a product. It's all better than what it did last year but like this conversation of or at least what Apple tries to do if comparing it to laptops over and over again puts it in a weird space and I've seen people who're creative workflows happen to fit this iPad Pro into the puzzle of what they do perfectly and I'm so jealous of those people who will sketch for hours on the iPad Pro who are DJs on the iPad Pro who are doing video editing on the iPad Pro and if it does meet your needs for that then this is an incredible iPad. This all has me thinking about two things one maybe iOS 13 when that comes out will really turn the iPad into its true form its final form. It'll unlock the USBC port to do way more things.

The iPhone S10e

The best way to explain the S10e

This is the Samsung Galaxy S 10 e with a lowercase e still don't know what the E stands for officially and the Galaxy S scene. It might not be a better phone on paper than the S10 and that's 10 plus but I can definitely say now that I've used it that it is a better deal. It's kind of a direct answer to the iPhone 10 are the not hiding that in any way like it's the same price but Hardware Wise It's Kind of a step up in every direction that isn't the battery. So it kind of got me thinking why not just get the S10 e so the best way to explain the S10 he used to tell you what's different versus the regular S10.  I'll link the S10 review right here or below the like button for those who haven't seen it already, but it's a very similar iPhone s10e specs.

This is everything that's different. So the big three are the cameras the fingerprint reader The new display and the price it's 750 bucks. Now, by the way, I feel like we need a new name for this like this $750 price because it's not budget but it's above mid-range still too but it's also below flagships like the flagship store like $900,000.

The cameras S10 e :

So it's above mid-range. So it's like a premium mid-range like a mid-range premium.
So the cameras S10 e has the exact same primary camera and the exact same Ultra wide camera like the S10. It's just missing the extra telephoto camera. Honestly, that's been totally fine. I don't really miss it at all. Zoomed in photos will now be digital Zoom instead of switching to the telephoto camera and that's all right with me and keeping the ultra-wide camera sweet. That's the new camera for the Samsung phones this year. And like I said in the review it's by far the most fun. It is still a bit softer and a bit more over-processed iPhone s10 camera in those photos.

Then the main camera definitely not as crispy but this is something software updates will continue to improve so that's that with the Camera, other than that same really good camera as we've had in the S10. So then the fingerprint reader instead of an ultrasonic fingerprint reader underneath the glass this S10. He has a good old classic capacitive fingerprint reader on the power button on the right side of the phone and coming back from the S10 to using this again, man. It's really easy to forget how good we got at this type of fingerprint reader. It kind of became the gold standard before we started moving on from them and we wanted all the screen space. So we start putting them on the back of the phone and the side but these fingerprint readers are really fast.

Setting the iPhone S 10 e :

This one here on the S10 e is just about one of the fastest fingerprint readers I've ever used and there are others that are this fast, but it just feels so much faster coming from the S tends ultrasonic reader it is way faster than that now for placement it is in the power button on the top right-hand side, but the power button is still also kind of high up on the side of this phone now since the phone is smaller. It's not as big of a deal and with bigger hands. It's even less of a big deal, but just a little bit Lower of a button that would have been perfect.

So the readers basically in a natural resting position for righties or for people who hold the phone in the right hand and on top of that there's even a gesture in the settings that you can turn on where you can Now swipe down to pull down the notification shade. So the thing for Twitter becomes a sort of a gesture pad and it's super responsive maybe even too sensitive. You can sort of doing it by accident a bunch if you're not careful, but once you get used to it, it's super useful to not have to reach up to the top of the phone every single time. So basically you pick up the phone and you just sort of hold it in a natural resting position it instantly unlocks and then you have access to the notifications just like that.

So the S10 e has the smallest display in the new lineup:

I mean it's not as technologically cool as the under glass ultrasonic fingerprint reader, but you could argue it's actually better than what you get on the S10 and some already have so that brings us to the last but not least important difference the display. So the S10 e has the smallest display in the new lineup. It's a five-point eight-inch screen.

It's still weird to call a five-point eight-inch display small, but it's true.
And it's still Dynamic AMOLED still a sharp high resolution. It's 20 to 80 by 1080 still has a whole bunch of cutout in the top Corner that makes for amazing wallpapers, of course, and still super bright and color accurate as you'd expect from a Samsung panel. The difference is it's flat. So it's a flat screen now instead of bleeding over the edges. So with that, you end up with slightly thicker more noticeable side bezels, but like barely and it's all relative still look at it next to an iPhone 10s.

"Remember Apple had all that talk about curving the OLED display to get the chin thinner and to get the edges all really close FC any has the same size side bezels and the chin, maybe two or three millimeters taller. So that's the aesthetic difference".

6 Gigs of RAM still seems like enough for iPhone S 10 e:

Also. One thing I noticed is the S. Tiny doesn't let you choose your displays screen resolution like the bigger S10 does and I'm not actually sure why I would guess it has something to do with the pentile display Matrix, they're using but either way it's kind of set and forget about the Box anyway, and it looks great. So assuming you don't hate the hole punch. This is still a fantastic display other little things six gigs of ram in the base model instead of eight not really a huge deal. I think it was if it was for you know, thanks to my concerns with the pixel. I would probably be also concerned about this but six gigs of RAM still seems like enough and you get a tan the upgraded model. So it's pretty close. The battery is slightly smaller. It's 3100 milliamp hours instead of the larger ones on the larger phones, but it's also a smaller display and as you know, that's the biggest power draw. So this is still a pretty great battery life Phone and then the color so as long as we're drawn parallels to the iPhone 10 are you might have noticed the destiny has a bit more color than the S10. So there's the glass on the back. This is flamingo pink.

So if you're the type to rock your phone naked you can enjoy having an extremely bright phone even honestly, even the red monstrous sensor and all my coloring ability through your screen probably won't do it justice. It's really pink but not only that the aluminum rails are color eyes a little bit. You have matching sides. It's more toned-down than the back but you can see it from the sides of the phone. And then even in the camera module unlike the S10 they color that metal in there as well. So it's a small touch black on the S10 color on the S10 e but that that's basically it for this phone. Those are the differences for 750 bucks.

"No, but it is a better deal matter of fact feature for feature as far as Hardware which you get and with a much better display and headphone jack and all these other things Ultra wide camera. I think it's a better deal than the iPhone 10 are now for a lot of people that won't even matter because they just want another iPhone but if you're not too tight into the ecosystem yet or if you're looking to get out of it then why not just any okay here you should buy the bigger higher on phone. If you need the ultrasonic fingerprint reader or the infinity display or the 2x telephoto camera, or if you just have a bigger $200 whole burning in your pocket".

Other than that Galaxy S 10 is probably the one most people should get either way.

11.4.19

Top 5 Android Q Features than you should know!

MKBHD here and Android Q where Q

MKBHD here and Android Q where Q is now out and in beta and this version, not a big visual overhaul, which is kind of what the big letter updates used to be and I miss that a bit but this is definitely full of a lot of smaller updates that people who use Android a lot will appreciate so I got Android Q beta 1 on my pixel it's available on pixels, for now, all the way back to the first gen pixel, but it is a beta and there are some things that are not stable about it. So I wouldn't put this on your main device. But if you want to try it, I'll link it below. So number one. There are some light theming options which is pretty cool. So in the settings, if you go to settings Advanced developer options and then go all the way scroll all the way to the bottom. There's a theming section with a couple of options accent color font and icon shape. So accent colors kind of cool. There are a couple of built-in options. I like the black but there's also a green and a purple and when you change the color you can see reflected in the menus. And the quick settings and toggles and everything.

The system-wide dark theme even more than an Android Pie:

It's not exactly an RGB select your tools not totally custom so you can't pick whatever color you want, but it's more than just the default blue, which is cool. Then you can change the default system font. If you want someone's into that and then the icon shape is also kind of interesting so you can change between the normal Circle that it typically is to teardrop the snorkel or a rounded rectangle and each option when you select it will change the icon shape for the icons that are on your home screen and in your app drawer and in your quick settings, so anywhere there are icons. Basically, I actually don't hate the teardrop or the snorkel which is a square circle, but the rectangle was a little boring for me. But hey the option is there also is so don't know if the dark mode is going to be a thing and Android natively but look what happens when you go into battery saver mode in Android Q when you toggle it you automatically get basically a system-wide dark theme even more than an Android Pie.

So it darkens the quick settings and the app drawer and everything else. Which is, of course, going to help save battery on OLED displays, but also looks pretty cool. Now. This is a battery saver mode. So you probably don't want to leave it on all the time because you lose some features and things and battery saver mode, but the fact that it does all that automatically still is something to keep an eye on the number two, there's even more granular control of app permissions thrilling stuff, but honestly, it is pretty important and kind of overdue. So now with things like location, for example, the first time you open an app that requests your location, you can set it to be on all the time.

Android P or any other previous version:

Never or only when the app is running. So basically like iOS, I'm glad that options here and there's number three new notification Behavior just for swiping just for swipe Direction. So in Android P or any other previous version, you can dismiss notifications by swiping left or right however you want but then to adjust notification settings or mute something you have to do this slightly awkward, like half swipe that was kind of easy to mess up not a huge deal, but they're fixing that with Android Q. So now notifications only dismiss will swipe to the right. It's that more definitive which each direction does also it's much more like iOS again so the number for the new share sheet and this may seem like one of those little tiny things but if you've used Android for more than about a week you already know this is a huge deal. So every version of Android up until now if you want to share something you hit share and it brings up the share sheet with all the places to send it to then after a massive delay.

"It also brings some quick sharing options from apps to use frequently, but that delay is painful and annoying to wait for every single time. And if you're trying to share something real quick, you can hit share and then go to press an app, but then the Quick Share options load up on top of it and it moves what you were about to press. So you press something else by accident".

Its what Android Q is all about:

I swear I do this every single day in Android Q This is cleaned up share shortcuts now all load at once which is a beautiful thing over and over. It's such a small detail, but I cannot wait to never have to deal with the old share sheet ever. The number five last but not least is all the little things just a bunch of little stuff piled together. It's kind of the theme of this update. Its what Android Q is all about. So there's a new and improved files app better-looking more organized just overall better than the last one you get a bit more battery information. So if you enable battery percentage visible, it will also show you when it thinks your battery will run out based on how much time it thinks you have left. So in those Quick Settings, I don't know how much you can trust that but hey if it's a pretty good estimate that's better than nothing.

You can now also undo removing things from the home screen. So it's such a small detail. But if you remove like a big custom widget or something by accident, you can easily just undo it to put it back exactly where it was without having to remember how to set it all up again. No stress lock screen album art. It's now blurred a lot when playing music which looks cleaner, but it's maybe a little too blurred. I feel like I'd prefer somewhere in the middle between these then there's also now behind the scenes support for foldable phones, which are coming sooner than you think and there's also now This super smooth animation for turning off the display and going into that always-on mode now I've never been a person to leave on the always on display, but that animation is pretty slick. Oh also, there's now a built-in native Android screen recorder.

Also speaking of screen recordings screenshots in Android Q:

Barely sorta, I mean it's kind of super buggy. I don't even know if I can say this really exist yet, but I'm just going to show it to you anyway, so if you dive into settings system Advanced and developer options, then you got a scroll until you find something called feature Flags, then in feature Flags scroll until you find one called enable settings screen record long, press and just make sure that is checked. It's not by default. Once this is checked. If you want to screen record you long press the power button then long, press the screenshot button.

And there you go. It gives you the option to start a screen recording and you can also turn on or off audio and show screen touches if you want which is Handy and then start then it's going so you get a notification drop down that says you're recording and you can go about using the phone just like normal while the screen recording goes this is one of my favorite features from IOS. They recently added it. Although with this one now, you can choose to show screen touches and do audio recording at Same time. You can do a whole tutorial with this. That's pretty cool.

So, you know, it's kind of a deal-breaker but that's a small detail like the stop button crashes the UI the pause button also crashes the whole app and the cancel button just straight up doesn't work either. So no matter what I try. I just kind of crashes and everything comes back and the screen recording is still going. So the only way I could get it to stop was to restart the whole phone and then the video would never actually show up in my gallery. So again beta this is beta 1 but I'm hoping really really hoping that this gets built out into its own feature in Android actually having a screen recording built-in would be pretty sweet. Also speaking of screen recordings screenshots in Android Q on the pixel now have a cutout for the notch.

Who knows which phones will ever actually get Android Q most flagships:

built into the screenshot why I don't know there are also corners on the screenshot to like the rounded Corner shows up can't say I saw that coming as a future, but hey, at least now, you know when you get a screenshot from someone that they definitely have a notch on their phone, but that's basically it that's that's mainly what's new with Android Q. There's some good stuff again a lot of smaller things and not a whole lot of visual refresh. I could put these side by side next to each other and you probably wouldn't notice unless I told you but who knows which phones will ever actually get Android Q most flagships coming out now are just getting P now peppermint, but peppermint what I said peppermint, it's Pi. I also don't know what the queue is actually going to stand for. I tried to think of Q desert names.

LG G8 Master of None!

That is the LG 8 thin Q in a nutshell.

It's pretty decent at pretty much everything fact. You probably wouldn't regret getting one but it doesn't stand out in any major way for eight hundred twenty bucks above the competition to actually give you a reason to go get one.
So yeah a little harsh but it's true so you can start with the design of this phone. It's nothing special. It's familiar to a lot of people who have seen other LG 2019 phones. It's a slab of glass with Rounded Corners. There's a power button and a good place volume rocker on the other side Google Assistant below those so there's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. It's just very plain, you know, like I hate to encourage, you know, going crazy or making weird choices just to be different and design but Like maybe they need a bit of a stronger identity here.

Like if I asked you to describe an LG phone and a couple words what even comes to mind really, you know, so I'll say this red color definitely pretty cool. It is also still a fingerprint magnet though like the other colors which are gray and black but also the cameras on the back are totally flat. So this is one of few phones I can actually say they really have no camera bump at all. So this is one of them which is nice, but I also think it makes it the sneaky slippery as the phone of all time. But other than that nothing really stands out to me, you know, it's a design.

It's a smartphone so you get a 6.1-inch display up front and it's quite good.

It's super high resolution 1440p and plenty bright not the brightest but it's viewable outdoors and with a very average Notch about the top and we'll talk more about why the notch is so big in a bit but the side bezels are a little bit more than slim. Its kind of feeling like the Galaxy S 10 e or the iPhone 10 is as far as bezel sighs anyway, and then the normal stuff at the Bottom is what you'd see in any other LG phone. You still have your USB C still your boom box speaker.

"Still your headphone. Jack back by high-quality DAC. This phone is ip68 water resistant and it still has wireless charging over all the builders good. It's not really like missing anything.
Although there are two things to note one is Boombox speaker. It still has at the bottom for some reason sounds worse to me".

I don't know what's worse than I remember like it's pretty flat and Hollow sounding and of course, it still comes from the bottom corner of the phone. So it's easy to block by accident. But number two. The other thing is if you actually look at the top of the phone where the earpiece normally is. This phone doesn't have one instead. They have a speaker behind the glass called Crystal sound OLED which fires from sort of the top third of the phone which to my ear sounded just like a normal phone call in terms of quality and volume, but I could also sort of here this buzzing like a thin rattling sound that you don't normally hear in a normal speaker. So that's the first time I've actually heard one of these replacement speakers sound a bit weird, but it's not a deal-breaker for me because I don't make that many phone calls in the first place and the bonuses it can sort of act like bone conduction and it works in more than just the top eighth of the phone.

Snapdragon 855 six gigs of RAM 128 3500 they're fine.

There's no upgraded version with like eight gigs of RAM or something. And if you want more storage, you have to go with micro SD which is kind of a bummer considering we have phones with way more internal storage for people who do lots of things on their phones and the battery size. It's fine. It's not pushing the limits or anything. It's bigger than the Galaxy has tens battery but it's not pushing the 4040 200 million Powers. We see on some other big phone. So the specs are fine and performance through LG software has been pretty smooth and predictable except for scrolling for some reason. So overall, I think LG skin is fine again.

I've used that word a lot. It hasn't changed much since last year. So the settings app is still a little overwhelming. It's still buried some things but for the most part things flow pretty smoothly and you can easily get used to it, but for some reason, the scrolling physics, especially in the app drawer is super stuttery and it's been a while now and really weird for a new phone like this to straight-up stutter.

But yeah, definitely not to mention that overall though performance just using the phone every day through LG software.

It's fine. I don't want to make this just a list of reasons not to buy this phone. So some of the good stuff for my favorite things about this phone is on the back and it's the two cameras LG was one of the first to consistently do that ultra-wide over the years that were just now starting to see on the backs of phones everywhere and they still do it. The sad thing for them is it was so easy to copy that now everyone just added an ultra-wide and they're now all caught up. It's not like LG mastered the ultra wide and Ice special way. So the cameras here are pretty fun, but they're not incredibly unique or anything but I like the consistency of these cameras.

It's a confidence shooter. It's fast. The color science is pretty good. It doesn't overexpose that often and the similarity in color between the 12-megapixel standard camera and the 16 megapixels ultra-wide I think is actually better than Huawei is in Samsung's and even in the camera UI as the nice little things like the Zoom with the shutter icon that are a nice touch. The camera is good in the G8 and again so many others have gotten so good that you just have to wonder about the ones who don't get it right like the razor is in This is of the world. But I guess that's a rant for another video. Now if you've noticed pretty much everything so far about this phone's been it's good. It's fine, you know, so you would think there's got to be something about this phone that takes it to the next level. I really make it stand out Above the Rest to make it LG's Flagship.

I guess for LG those things are hand ID and are motion.

Yeah, so the notch up here in the phone is so big because LG has dropped a few extra sensors up there including time of flight camera and an infrared blaster and receiver to be able to read and identify and track your hand and its movement. So with hand ID, you're supposed to be able to just hovered over your phone to unlock it and with our motion. You're supposed to be able to open apps and control media and things like that without touching your phone and I will say it is a cool idea. I kind of wish it worked better than it did but in practice, as you can probably understand from my tone and from the first impressions video, it's far from ideal.

It's usable at best but it's not good. So with hand ID first, I mean it works, but you have to hold your hand in a very specific distance and spot around in front of the phone and the learning curve even for me was just a bit too much and it just makes you not want to use it plus straight up the feedback on the screen to help you correct yourself is blocked by your hand that you're trying to unlock it with. So yeah, I mean it has a fingerprint. Her on the back.

I just turned off hand ID and use the regular fingerprint reader. Like I think most people will and they are the motion to be fair. It seems to be a tiny bit more responsive than when I first tried it in The Impressions video a little while ago specifically the volume knob actually seems to be more responsive now and easier to trigger correctly and then the twisting motion tracks really well, which is awesome. Put the rest of it like the waving to the left or right to open apps or take your screenshot.

"Also, this is how long it takes to pause something that's playing so we have music playing. Oh someone calls you. Oh, wait, hold on one second".

The Death of AirPower: Explained!

Apple has now officially canceled the air power wireless charging Matt. It's totally dead. The project is over. There is no replacement.

It's done and it's so bizarre just because I mean it didn't have to be a big deal at all. This is theoretically a wireless load, but it became a big deal and became very strange because of the way things where it became this big deal and became very strange because of the way things played out and because of what Air Power should be Air Power, was announced two years ago in 2017 with the iPhone 10 and should be, with the iPhone 10 back two years ago in 2017, and it was supposed to be a wireless charging that in white. You've probably seen pictures of it that would charge the iPhone they are pods and your Apple watch all at the same time and because it was made by Apple over third party stuff couldn't do this, but I would have this sweet iOS integration where would show the charging percentage of all the things on the mat all on iOS on the Phone so it would have been in this pretty nifty solution for people who owned all three things. This is not possible with current standards.

But our team knows how to do this. We call it air power. So look for the are par charger next year. So that was September 2017.

They said next year which would have been 2018 all of 2018 past. We kind of held our breaths and obviously nothing happened now apparently interesting fact at these Apple events, you know, there's typically a Hands-On area where if they announce new products that's where you can get your first time to get footage of it. I was there at that event. I'd spent all my time with the new iPhones are power was also in that Hands-On area, but if you go back and look at those videos from 2017 people were in there people were recording it but nobody was actually able to get anything to work people using air power in their videos were putting things on the mat and they just weren't charging. So that was maybe the first sign things weren't exactly going to plan. So a couple weeks go by A couple months go by and eventually, we're getting into 2018 and people start to wonder as we don't hear anything when are powers coming out? Is it going to be with a new product alongside?

"Something else is going to be its own separate thing. Are they just going to silently put it on sale and then slowly one by one piece by piece Apple started to remove air power from their site? They removed the official listing They removed references to it from other listings".

They just slowly started to erase is power from the internet.

But as you know, you can't really erase something from the internet. It kind of has the opposite effect. So when that started happening everyone started finding that and writing articles about any last traces of anywhere, you could find our power all the way up until a couple days ago when they just started shipping are pods to and those wireless charging cases are power was still mentioned on the box. And if you buy even to this day are pods wireless charging case, there's a diagram of air power on the back of it.

So every time someone found something like this or some updated code in iOS that mentioned Power there would be some little glimmer of hope that maybe we're actually going to see this product but also hopes were kind of dashed every time than in September of 2018. So a whole year after the announcement people will still wonder where it was John Gruber who is awesome and a noted Apple Insider and very reliable source all the time wrote on his site what I've heard third hand, but for multiple Little Birdies is that air power really is well and truly hot something about the multi-coil design getting too hot way too hot. So there are Engineers who looked at are powers original design who said it could never work thermally.

And now those Engineers have a told you so smug look on their faces last year Apple is apparently swayed by arguments that they could figure out a way to make it work without getting hot and they were clearly wrong. So that was one of many reports that seem to point to engineering problems with air power. So what is this multi-coil design? Why is this such a problem? So apparently the big feature of air power was not just that it's a wireless charging that for three things but that you could place any one of these Three things down anywhere on the mat and it would detect what it was and just start charging now, if you're like me and you've used a typical wireless charger before that process with one coil in the mat and one coil in the phone can kind of be this like awkward process of lining it up and getting it just right for it to start charging and if it's off or if you bump it and you wake up the next morning and you dumped it off the coil.

It wouldn't have charged and some larger mats have had up to three coils for you know, three different Hotspots for charging three different things at once. But generally, Apple just wanted to basically reinvent this way of wireless charging you wanted to add their own Magic Touch to it. So there are comments. Now from people in this industry saying that air power was rumored to have anywhere from 20 to 30 plus coils in that one mat that allowed for total XY Freedom so you could put it anywhere on the mat and it would pick the nearest coil and be close enough to charge but 20 to 30 coils in one Mass. So clearly thermal issues through that whole process and with that whole idea had it. Not working. It's just too small of a spaceman.

Just apple and thermals just don't seem to get along especially lately. So basically Apple then had two options at that point and this was last year, but at this point they could either change air power like you can't have 20 to 30 coils in this small of a space so you can change it or you can just cancel it and now in March 2019 finally apples admitted this isn't going to work. They're not going to Rebrand it. They're not going to restructure this project they canceled it and I guess that's pretty Apple like that. They would rather cancel the whole project then make different wireless charging man speaking of which there is plenty of other Qi wireless charging pads all over the Internet Nomads sent me this one, but I've had it for a while and used it at home. It's their wireless charging Hub.

You can charge all three things at once the Apple watch kind of goes up top. But you know the same thing it works. It's not like a white orb or anything, but apparently, they went immediately out of stock of these as soon as that sort of news hit that is power wasn't happening. So it's backward on their site, but I'll leave an On the link below for stuff like this. I don't think that many people were actually going to by air power. It's not like a game changer for them. It's not like they canceled the iPhone 11 or something or canceled the Mac Pro glad please don't cancel the Mac Pro by the way. Oh my God, they could cancel. The Mac Pro Apple is canceling unannounced products. The Mac Pro is unannounced.

"They could cancel the Mac, but they're not going to cancel the Mac Pro. That's too important.
Nobody buys a Mac Pro though".

Please don't oh my God. Anyway bottom line. It wasn't a huge deal because of how small of a product it was. I think it would have been maybe a hundred eighty bucks maybe around 200 bucks, but we could be either mad at Apple for not shipping a product that they promised to ship. That's pretty weird. Not a good look at all.

But also we can be glad that they didn't ship something that would have been dangerous for thermal reasons like maybe a Samsung maybe has in the past. Maybe let me know which can appear in if you're kind of bummed that are powers not happening or if you're just having a laugh at Apple for not shipping something they promised they would but there you go. Now, you know way too much about a product that doesn't exist and a timeline and the history and everything that went into it, but that's been it hope you enjoyed thanks for watching.
